Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy supports people to join in everyday activities (or occupations) to lead a full and happy life, learning the skills needed to improve their health, independence and wellbeing. Taking into consideration the person, the occupation, and the environment, occupational therapists support their patients to ensure they are able to fully participate in their life and community.

When working with children and young people, the role of an occupational therapist is to provide support and/or advice to children and their families, with and without diagnoses, who have trouble completing age-appropriate everyday activities. This could be due to illness, disability, family circumstances, or as a result of changes as they get older.

Occupations for children or young people may include:

Self-care

  • Dressing

  • Eating a meal

  • Using the toilet

  • Making a simple meal

Being productive

  • Participating in activities and
    routines at nursery or school

Leisure

  • Playing with friends

  • Practicing sports

  • Participating in hobbies

Occupational therapists will support the child or young person, their family and other relevant people such as teachers, to evaluate challenges and strengths in doing daily activities. This service usually occurs within the child’s natural environment (home, school or other relevant community settings), although specialist assessments may also take place in a clinic.

Speech and Language Therapy

Therapists assess and support children and young people with communication and/or eating and drinking difficulties. Sometimes a child’s communication difficulties can have an impact on their everyday life and our aim is to support them in developing the skills or abilities to reduce this impact.

Speech and Language Therapy can help in a variety of cases, including:

  • Speech difficulties

  • Communication disorders

  • Language difficulties

By including families and carers throughout our personalised plans, we are able to provide children with full and continuous support and aid their progression. Our therapists are also here to support families emotionally as it can often impact families just as much as children.

Behavioural Therapy

Behavioural Therapy focuses on changing a child's behaviour, using early intervention and parent training to reduce behavioural challenges.

For children both with and without diagnosed learning disabilities, as well as their families or carers, behavioural therapy has been shown to improve quality of life, and has long-term social and economic benefits.

At Eliana's Haven, we provide a Parental Coaching Program alongside Behavioural Therapy to support parents through their child's intervention program. This gives children consistent support at home and in our center, as well as providing parents with time to focus on their own wellbeing alongside understanding of their child's needs.
